Winter Magic on the North Fork of Long Island

snow on pine branchIt’s January on the North Fork of Long Island. We celebrated a cozy Christmas, and rang in 2014 with local bubbly. Now, we focus on the year ahead. What to do first!

January begins with snow, and we would like to share with our fans just what the East End of Long Island, particularly the North Fork, has to offer its visitors. Did you think that everything would be closed now? Well, we are open for business and some of our returning guests feel that the wintertime is this region’s best kept secret!

The next few months will be the off-season at our Bed & Breakfasts, which means that prices are at their best value, while packages and specials abound. Once here, it’s an amazing time to experience Long Island Wine Country tasting rooms. Sure, the harvest is full of activity and bustling energy, but winter through early spring can give you the best of personalized service and a warm atmosphere. Wine lovers insist on visiting during quiet times at the wineries. Most often, you will be able to enjoy a private tasting or tour, sit by the fireplace (if available, such as at Raphael in Peconic), and wine stewards can interact more readily, offering a variety of perks at the tasting bar.

Coming in February, Wine Country will begin its annual Long Island Winterfest: Live on the Vine, where renowned musicians will perform at tasting rooms across the two forks. Visit www.liwinterfest.com, for more information on this regional winter festival.fireplace

This time of year is also a fantastic time for family outings to our area. In Riverhead, we recommend the Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center, www.longislandaquarium.com. Sitting outside for a show may not be an option on a snowy or freezing day, but the crowds will be long gone from the Christmas break, and kids will love the up-close and personal view they will have of the sea life, butterfly and bird display.

Hungry for something new? Our local dining hot spots have put together seasonal menus to warm your soul, and also offer prix fixe meals to help your pocket. Be sure to visit the restaurants on the romantic North Fork route, through Greenport. Helpful Hint: Call ahead or visit the restaurant’s website for updated hours, reservation requirements and new menus.

Good luck in your getaway planning. We are here to answer any questions you may have!
